This week’s edition of our Worker Wellness blog looks at the chaos in Mexico following the death of a powerful Cartel boss—to how the staffing shortage in prisons is impacting the Mental Health of employees—to the FBI’s misuse of taxpayers’ funds…not to mention its Director’s inappropriate conduct in Italy.
Focal Point: This week I wish to discuss with our readers 4 ‘related’ events that unfolded this past week with respect to Suicide Postvention.
1 & 2) I had the honor of addressing 2 groups of construction leaders in Avon, CO and Portland, OR. The former was at the request of Rich Ledbetter, the CEO of Guarantee Electric, at the semi-annual Federated Electrical Contractors meeting. Wherein, I discussed the importance of connecting the 3 legs of the Suicide Triangle. The latter was at the 5thannual Construction Mental Health conference. Herein, I presented the findings of my 2-year pilot study’s findings that focused on the acute phase of Suicide Postvention in the construction industry.
3) For those of you seeking a well-done primer on Suicide Postvention, refer to the webinar link in the last section below. This past Wed, Riverside delivered a 2-hour webinar that addressed how schools, workplaces, and communities need to ‘prepare’ for the unexpected loss of family members, friends, and colleagues who die by suicide.
4) Finally, my US mentor and friend, Dr Frank Campbell sent me a link to a recent podcast on which he was a guest.[1] The theme mainly focused on the journey ‘from grief to growth’ relating to unexpected losses in our lives. While the 2 hosts discuss their recent loss experiences with Frank, he weaves into the discussion his +40 years of Postvention observations. Frank has developed a construct known as the Canyon of ‘Y’…explaining that those of us who are loss survivors often come to a fork in the river: We can choose Opportunity or Danger. It is well worth a listen!
