This week’s edition of our Worker Wellness blog takes a look at how US overdose deaths have fallen and yet MO considers cutting Narcan funding—to a variety of articles covering the negative impacts of AI and online gambling—to new science on your waste and flatus.
Focal Point: This week I wish to highlight 2 important events happening in the STL Construction Industry…both of these are FREE to attend!
1) On Apr 16 (Thursday) at 11:30a CT, we will be hosting a 90-minute webinar on Suicide Postvention.[1] Thanks to the leadership and support of Laborers LU 42 and Guarantee Electrical Company, the construction industry in this region has an opportunity to learn about an evidence-based model that covers the often unspoken—but yet important—3rd leg of the Suicide Triangle: Postvention. In essence, how do we as organizations and co-workers prepare for and process unexpected deaths. To this end, research suggests that:
a) the US construction industry loses >1 worker approximately every 2 hours of the day…each day of the week…each week of the year to suicide!
b) 1 suicide death impacts 135 people near and dear to the person we lost;
c) the USA alone loses just under 50,000 people each year to suicide.
That equates to ~6 million people—each year—who are exposed to suicide and are often left to their own devices on how to move forward in their personal and professional lives. Register here.
2) On Apr 18 (Saturday) at 9:30a CT, the MO chapter of AFSP will be hosting the 2nd Annual Hike for Hope in Pacific, MO.[2] Our very own, Tim Rowden, Editor of The Labor Tribune, is serving as this year’s chair. In 2017, the CDC reported that the US construction industry is #2—as an industrial sector—when it comes to suicide deaths. More recently, CPWR data revealed a <2% annual decrease in these related deaths. I think you will agree that we still have a long way to go! Register here.
Please join us, on Apr 16th and Apr 18th, as WE continue the journey in OUR ongoing efforts to help others in need.
