Worker Wellness Blog thru Mar 8, 2026

This week’s edition of our Worker Wellness blog looks at another lawsuit concerning AI’s impact on Suicide Deaths—to how ‘prop’ bets are impacting college campuses and influencing wars—to a variety of efforts to reshape and support Women in the Construction Industry.

Focal Point: This week I wish to discuss with our readers the importance of sleep. It is no secret that we moved the clocks forward this weekend in most parts of the USA. Debates continue regarding the pros and cons of this (anti-farming?) practice. For those of you who have attended one of my wellness and well-being presentations, you already know that I speak to this issue of sleep as part of our positive path forward.

In an always on world, without a doubt, more of us need to seek balance in the physical and mental aspects in our lives. This balance should not come down to an either/or choice but rather a both/and. To this end, I ask participants to visualize a 3-legged stool: Mind, Body, and Spirit.

            1) Mind: Many of us ruminate on the Past and/or are anxious about the Future. Yet, few of us take a few minutes each day to settle our minds to focus on the Present. If you have not already done so, please take 7 minutes to watch this poignant video by Prince EA.[1]

            2) Body: Are you watching what you eat, exercising daily, seeing a DC or DPT on a regular basis, and getting 7-8 hours of sleep each and every night? To the latter, all of us must recharge our batteries in order to be fully present for ourselves and others. Sadly, our teens are falling further behind on this matter![2, 3]

            3) Spirit: For many of us, this time of the year is special (Lent for Christians and Ramadan for Muslims; Passover for Jews will begin early next month). For all, charity is a major focus during this holy period. Pew research in 2025 suggested that 83% of US adults believe in a higher being while 79% were spiritual—believing in ‘something’ beyond the natural world. The concept of gratitude is closely linked to charity. To be sure, research reveals that investing in others—often less fortunate than us—improves our mental well-being and fosters community.[4]

How will you plan to balance that stool?

My name is Tim Benoist. I’m a Pipefitter with Local 562 and one of the founders of “Hard Hats of Hope”,a nonprofit created to help construction workers and their families when they are going through tough times. Whether it is mental health struggles, financial hardship, or unexpected life events, we want people in the trades to know they are not alone.

To support the mission we are hosting a Mouse Races Fundraiser on April 4th. It will be a fun night of mouse racing, raffles, food, drinks, and good company all while raising money for a great cause.

If you have any questions or want more information feel free to contact Tim at 314 805 3884.
